The Tale of Krazok Hexfang
Chapter I, in Durotar

First Light in the Valley

Krazok Hexfang opened his eyes to the red stone of the Valley of Trials, a troll new to the world and new to the Horde, a hunter without a single kill behind him. The valley held him in close, cliffs of baked clay and rust rising all around, cactus and scrub clinging to the cracks, and the dens of boars and scorpids hidden among the broken rock. The sun sat high and merciless over it all, and the air was dry as old bone.

He did not linger long at the valley's mouth. A task was given him there, to find his place among the Horde, and he carried word of it to The Den, a cave camp cut into the cliffs where orc and troll trainers kept their fires and their caged captives. It was done inside a minute, and from The Den he took up two more charges, Cutting Teeth and Wayward Weapons, and went back out into the baked light to earn them.

It was there, deeper in, that Krazok came first against Sarkoth, and put the creature down for the honor of it, and later again when the task was given him a second time. Word of a true threat drew him further still, into the Burning Blade Coven, a cave scored into the valley's cliffs where robed cultists kept their fires low and their imps bound to their will. Alone and with his companions by turns, Krazok cut through the coven's familiars again and again, dozens of them falling to axe and arrow before the day was done, until the coven's medallion was his to carry back and the task closed.

A peon's errand took him to Foreman Thazz'ril, who wanted his pick back, and Krazok found it and returned it, and learned by then that the valley had little more to teach him. He passed back out of the Valley of Trials and into the wider country of Durotar proper, the land opening around him into a harder red expanse, boars rooting in the thorn scrub, the warm shallow sea glittering somewhere to the east past ridges of ochre stone.

When the light had gone long and gold over the hill, Krazok Hexfang stood within Razor Hill's walls, home now truly set there, a hunter of level seven with a long list of errands still waiting on him, the skull in Sen'jin Village, the matriarch among the beasts, the Kolkar raiders pressing at Durotar's edges, and more besides. The spiked huts stood quiet around him in the falling dark, banners hanging still in the heat, and beyond the watchtower the red country stretched away toward the coast, waiting for him to take up the road again.

Three steps

  1. Install the addon. It records on its own; it never touches the internet.

  2. Sign in with Battle.net and link your character with one command in the game.

  3. Run the companion, a small tray app that carries each session here when you log out. When you stop playing, the chapter is written.

Made for Hardcore

One life. One book.

Talekeeper was made for hardcore characters. On a hardcore realm the Tale is a whole story with a true ending: from the first steps to the last stand. If your hero falls, the book closes with them, and what is left is every road they walked.

And if they never fall, the book never ends: it keeps being written, one chapter every time you play. Any ruleset is welcome. Hardcore is where the book means the most.

The rules of the book

  • It narrates only what was logged. Nothing invented, ever.
  • Chat is never recorded. Your days are private; the archive is yours to download or delete.
  • Nothing tied to the game: no rewards, no tokens. A memory, not a prize.

Why

It is time we spend playing this game, time that never comes back. Better a wide log of it, like the photographs that mean so much years later. This is that log, written as a book, one chapter each time you play.
